Sony has introduced a new compact camera that features a full-frame, 35mm sensor - a world first.
The Sony RX1 uses the same 24.3 million pixel XMOR CMOS sensor as the Sony a99, which was also announced today.
A 35mm f/2.0 Carl Zeiss T* lens is fixed on the camera, and image processing is handled by a new Bionz engine.
This processor facilitates Full HD video recording, and sensitivity capabilities ranging from ISO 50-102,400.
Sony believes that because it has developed all three of the main elements of the camera (the sensor, lens and processor) in house, it has a quality advantage over competitors in the market.
Advanced users
Sony is keen to emphasise the design of the camera which it is targeting at professional users. With a minimalistic approach, it features dials and rings that are intended to appeal to the more advanced photographer.
Crafted from aliminium, the body of the camera is very slim and a focusing ring, macro switching ring and aperture ring can be found around the lens, along with custom buttons.
Sony took the design lead from its recently announced premium compact camera, the RX100, which is currently the best-selling premium compact camera in the UK.
Unlike the Sony RX100, the Sony RX1 has an accessory shoe, which enables additional extras, such as a viewfinder or thumb grip to be attached to the camera.
A 3-inch LCD screen can be found on the back of the camera which incorporates white magic technology.
Price and availability
The Sony RX1 is set to retail for around £2,500 (around $4,025), with a release date of early December.
